This area starts out with a narrow passageway that has a few Curly Clones hanging around some chambers that are lined up against the wall in groups of four. When they see Quote, they shoot black projectiles at him. They are mostly found standing on large dark coloured blocks that create columns. It is in this stage that the player first comes across Curly Clones. The player should move Quote left and then up the open passageway. Several different spikes, including death ones, can be seen near the end. This area has a few grey bats and critters that hang from the ceiling or stay put on the ground until approached. Eventually, they should spot a door surrounded by stone blocks that Quote can enter.

The general direction of this area is to move to the player's right. One normal Gaudi, also found in the Labyrinth, can be found here, along with a couple of purple critters from the first part of the Labyrinth. Another type flies and was not encountered in any previous area within Cave Story. One, previously confronted in the Labyrinth, hops on platforms and shoots blue and white projectiles towards Quote. In the later part of the area, numerous types of Gaudis can be seen. The player is to use the Booster, in some cases, to make it to these platforms and not fall off. Quote emerges to the outside, where many smaller blocks make up platforms that appear to be fixed in the air. Death spikes are placed on either ends of the bottom, with a door closer to the left. Multiple Power Critters sit on these slanting platforms, and close to the bottommost one is a chest with the Map System. Some spikes line the walls and edges of platforms. The general direction to proceed to the next area is downwards. Most tiles and enemies here were encountered in the Bushlands. The player is timed on how fast they can complete all the stages combined.Īt the start of the Drafty Cave, Quote is placed in front of an open door in an enclosed space, where several disjointed platforms run down the middle. The Wind Fortress is progressed in several stages that transition directly from one to the other. The player starts with 43 HP and is given the Spur, Blade, Booster v2.0 with the 290 Counter activated. It shares physical features with other "outside" areas such as the Balcony.

There's a character that can be saved from death and an entire secret section of the game, but unless you already know how to do it, you'll almost certainly not discover it by chance. The Wind Fortress is placed on the underside of the island. The second issue is that it's difficult to work out certain parts of the game without searching about it online. The finale of the game has you face several bosses without a save point, and to have to repeat the dialogue every retry is a pain, especially as the solution would have been so simple to implement. The first is the inability to skip dialogue when restarting a section after dying. Two of the original release's flaws carry over to this version too. The only criticism I have of this specific port is that boosting and shooting at the same time is a little tricky with Switch controls, especially in enemy-filled areas that require frame-perfect precision platforming. It's a perfect fit on the Nintendo Switch, and this version is certainly the definitive version, but those looking for the best value may find it difficult to purchase this game over a new title.

Taking damage from both monsters and environmental obstacles always feels like your mistake, not the game design's, so I never found myself frustrated by a death.Īs much as Cave Story has been one of my favourite games for many years, it's hard to ignore that it has been available for free for as many years.

When you take damage, your equipped weapon loses experience, making it weaker. Most weapons have their own levelling system which requires you to collect shiny gold pieces dropped by enemies. Many of these are useful for different scenarios, with some powerful secret weapons to discover. Throughout the game, you'll find a variety of weapons, including your default Polar Star gun, a missile launcher, and the Fireball.

The first area of the game teaches you all the basics without you even knowing it has, which is far better than an obnoxious tutorial.Ĭontrols are as simple as the SNES games Cave Story harks back to use the analog stick or d-pad to move, press A to jump, B to shoot, X to open your inventory, and the ZR/ZL buttons to switch your weapon. I've always appreciated games that don't treat you like an idiot, and this is one of them.
